More vidya soundtracks for a Saturday: this time, it's the rather bloopy Pac Mania.
Pac Mania sees Pacman in isometric 3D and the ability to bounce over enemies at the cost of being able to see the entire maze in one screen. Add more ghosts than the four standard ones of Inky, Pinky, Blinky and Clyde and you truly have a mania on your hands. Sure, it's not the same as the original, but the novelty of jumping over enemies (who can also jump with you in later levels) let alone the pseudo-3D aspect
Enter the Atari ST, where this video's audio comes from. More or less a direct port of the arcade game, Pac Mania for the ST makes best use that it can of the bendy, detuned square waves of the Yamaha chip powering its sound engine and in the process makes for a very catchy set of tunes alongside the standard gobble and dash sounds of Pacman. Overall, it emphasises the feeling of fun you get with Pacman through the bright, charming soundtrack and for me this is more than enough to make me praise it highly.
A game that ramps up the difficulty fairly quickly, this is well worth getting in to if you aren't already.
